Harrison: A Gateway Town With Deep Roots
Harrison has been called Harrison since 1814, named for General William Henry Harrison of nearby North Bend. The original four blocks were platted by 1810 around Market Street (now Harrison Avenue) and Walnut Street.
The town has been through a lot. An 1854 tornado. The 1913 flood. Even Morgan's Confederate raiders, who rode through in July 1863 and burned the bridge at the end of what is now State Street.
Harrison also had the first high school in Hamilton County outside Cincinnati. Its one-room schoolhouses later merged into the Southwest Local School District in 1954.
Harrison became a city in 1981. Today about 12,500 people live here, and the city calls itself a "gateway to the west" thanks to I-74 and its spot on the Ohio-Indiana line.
